The Gertrude A. Stewart Charitable Trust
The Summer Program
Since 1978 the Trust has sponsored a summer program in Margate, New Jersey. The
program consists of six one-week seaside vacations, from late June until the first week
of August, for four different mentally disabled persons each week, in a house rented
by the Trust.
The vacationers are transported to and from the shore and are under the complete
supervision of employees of the Trust. The purpose of this program is to build the
social confidence and awareness of mentally retarded adults through recreation.
By affording the participants the new experience of getting away from home and
family, the program serves to foster independence and cooperation.
Participants are mentally disabled individuals in their twenties, thirties and forties who
are chosen by the social workers at the Delaware County Mental Health/Mental
Retardation Center in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
