The Gertrude A. Stewart Foundation was established by the late
    Gertrude A. Stewart, founder and director of the Stewart School,
    Swarthmore, PA.

    Gertrude Stewart was a pioneer educator of the mentally ill who
    believed that growth depends upon the number and quality of
    opportunities presented. The school was opened in 1928 and
    continued until 1972 when the Foundation was established as a
    private non-profit organization.
